The history of SEOC dates back to 1987, when a group of oncology nurses had a dream of forging an organization that would represent them and allow them to have a common guideline that would translate into strengthening oncology nursing and into better care for patients with cancer. Thus the “Chilean Chapter of Oncology Nursing” was born.
Today SEOC is the benchmark for Oncology Nursing throughout Chile; they are pioneers in building a community in the field and in safeguarding integrated care and Quality of Life for both their community and their patients.

As part of the objectives of the current board, SEOC established its congress in the La Serena Region, as a way of decentralizing the events that are generally held in Santiago de Chile;
For his part, Samuel Riffo L., president of SEOC, expressed in one of his posts on the professional network LinkedIn:
"I do not know if I can summarize what our 5th International Congress of the Chilean Oncology Nursing Society (SEOC) meant. I thank each attendee, each speaker, our sponsors and patrons, the Congress organizing team and its Director Paulina Suárez, the Central and Extended Board, the Scientific Committee, the event production company and everyone who contributed so that we could bring our activity to the north of the country.
I hope that, beyond the excellent level of speakers and topics we had, we have generated the spirit of friendship, camaraderie, solidarity and charisma that characterizes our Society in each one of the participants.
We will keep working to improve and strengthen our oncology specialty in the country, by and for our users, their families and the community, without forgetting that no one is superfluous — we are all important.
Speakers of excellence:
Every year SEOC surprises with the quality of its speakers, something that has not gone unnoticed at the national level; confirming and positioning itself as the benchmark of oncology nursing in Chile and even in other countries.

Recognitions filled with emotion:
At the 5th International Oncology Nursing Congress, three recognitions were awarded:
Paola Viveros for her contribution to Oncology Nursing in the area of pediatrics at the national and international level.
Paulina Suárez for the end of her working career, since this year she decided to retire.
Cristian Meza V. who obtained first place for his research work “compassion-centered conceptual model for comprehensive palliative assessment and care”
Words of thanks from Paola Viveros L.
Upon receiving the recognition, she expressed:"I receive this recognition with surprise, emotion and mainly with much gratitude. First of all, I thank God for everything I am and everything I have lived as a person and as a nurse. I am grateful for all the affection received in this award and in all the warm greetings from my colleagues of the society. I thank everyone who made it possible, and especially Kely Barahona who, besides being an inspiration to me, in her generous, integral and global vision, always wanted to have pediatric oncology nursing represented in our association and invited me to participate from the laying of the foundations of this society. It is a source of pride and an honor for me to be part of this great community, where we work constantly, without discrimination, to improve the care we provide to our patients with cancer in all stages of life and of the disease.
And a thousand thanks to my beloved family, for being my unconditional supporters, for the unwavering support in my career and of course for the deep love they give me daily, which has been my motivating force in everything I do.
I am infinitely grateful to have them by my side. They are my permanent source of inspiration. I hope to honor this award with my commitment to our scientific society, this privileged space, in which there is so much, so much inspiring talent, first-class professionals, wonderful friends and development opportunities in all areas.
I hope to keep contributing to the advancement of all our projects which, without a doubt, allow us to leave a legacy for our profession and specialty."

Testimonial:
We interviewed Natalia Palacio Ruz, (c) EPA Master in Oncology Nursing, Catholic University of Chile, supervising nurse of the Oncology and Chemotherapy unit at HRLBO and Treasurer of the current SEOC Board, who told us about her personal experience at the 5th SEOC Congress.
Which topics caught your attention the most?
The topics that most caught my attention were precision medicine, since the approach given by Mr. Alejandro Poli placed us as nurses at the central axis of the health system, which is quite disruptive and a paradigm shift considering that it is always the patient who is at the center; however, it makes a lot of sense that we, oncology nurses, are at the center, since, as he explained well, we are the ones in the middle between the patient and the team, articulating all the care and ensuring that it is of quality, timely and equitable.
How could technology and information science help oncology nursing in Chile?
Technology can definitely be seen as an ally and as a new specialty in our work, since from digital platforms we can substantially improve care management, making processes more efficient; as nurses, we know very well and thoroughly the care flows of our patients both in care and in administration, so being able to bring that reality into the digital era will undoubtedly be a positive impact not only for us as healthcare providers, but also for decision-makers, those who make public policies, and of course a great benefit for patients and their families.
How do you see the integration of other areas such as meditation, mindfulness and emotion management?
It is fundamental. Working in the health field caring for people with their ailments is already a highly demanding job psychologically and emotionally; if we add to this the complexity of caring for the oncology patient, who has practically all areas of their life affected, the impact on those of us — the teams who treat them — is even greater. Therefore, practicing integrative medicine, a concept that involves traditional medicine together with complementary medicine, becomes not only fundamental but also very necessary, since it considers individuals — patients as well as the health team — as dual beings, with physical and spiritual needs that can be attended to in order to obtain a good quality of life.
Reflections of the author of the article:
It is beautiful to see a community grow — individual and diverse people, each with many skills and personalities, living in different parts of the country but united through their service in the area of oncology nursing, especially through an organization that possesses a collective consciousness that keeps changing and sustaining itself over time.
For us at Visibles World, helping them with social media matters and communications consulting means contributing with our knowledge and more than 20 years of experience, which go beyond a "customer service"; it means feeling fulfilled in contributing to their organization, which in some way benefits not only the members of the society, but also has repercussions on their families, friends and the patients around them.
The evolution of scientific societies carries with it a "live motive" (a great life motivation), or perhaps a "common spirit", which can begin to be appreciated much more as time goes by, since it is built over time; and just as trees grow, we do not manage to notice how they grow day by day — we coexist with them but on a different time scale from ours. And the same happens with societies that keep sharing that spirit from generation to generation.
